Uncle Perc's tips for safe web browsing

this is primarily for my facebook friends. as we all know, the internet is a dangerous place, and a lot of times folks use outdated or commonly used software for their web browsing without giving much thought to the risks. there are quite a few alternatives out there though, that can help make the experience safer. google recently came out with their web browser chrome, apple has safari, and there's the one i'll be talking about, firefox. this is my advice:

don't use internet explorer. one thing to remember about hackers, virus writers, and such ne'er do wells, is that they go for maximum exposure. this makes weaknesses in internet explorer their #1 target. so don't use it.

go here:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

and download the firefox browser

once you've done that, open the new web browser, which will prompt you to copy over your bookmarks and preferences from IE.

then follow this link:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

select "add to firefox"

this will prevent scripts from running on pages you look at. initially this will result in some really funky looking web pages, as a lot of the advertisements will be blank and some things won't work, like some video embeds, search fields, etc. you can fix this by looking at the bar that should appear at the bottom of your browser.

on the right side of the bar should be an "options..." button. click that and it will show you all the scripts running on that page. you'll be surprised to find that many times there are 10 or more different websites trying to run scripts on a single page! but this addon will allow you to pick and choose which ones are allowed to function.

happy hunting!

your daily 80s 6

if you think of Danny Elfman, the first thing that may come to mind is the movies, particularly Tim Burton movies, for which Elfman did most of the soundtracks. unless you grew up in the 80s. for before he became famous composing soundtracks for movies like Batman, Spider-Man, Men in Black, and Terminator Salvation (full list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Elfman#Filmography ) he was the lead singer for a little band called Oingo Boingo.
here's their 1984 hit from the movie of the same title, Wierd Science. OOOOOO

Your Daily 80s 5

Now it'll actually appear to be daily!

Today we've got the Thompson Twins, which, I know everyone will be shocked to hear, are not actually twins. Gasp! here's their first really big hit "Hold Me Now"

Your Daily 80s 4

If you'd asked me when this song came out what it was about, I probably would have "No idea, it just sounds cool." (I was only 10 years old at the time) Hearing it again a few years later, it elicited a George Takei style "Oh my!"

Here's Frankie Goes to Hollywood with "Relax"

Your Daily 80s 3

Today we've got a double song from a little band from the land down under you may have heard of: INXS

Here they are with "I Need You Tonight/Mediate"
Trivia time: the video for "Mediate" is an homage to Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

HELO I AM A NEW BLOG

So...here we are..alone, just the two of us. Why does this blog exist?

I've been wanting to do a blog style sort of thing for a while to publish my e-comic 10,000 A.D. (hence the fancy banner up top) but I am lazy and slow to update it. But I also like to post other things, such as 80s music videos on facebook, and random political and sociological rantings, so I figured with a blog I can do all of those things and let the tags take people to where they want to go. Originally I was going to do this on its own site, but that takes money I don't have right now. C'est la vie. Enjoy!
